Short video for business: what to shoot, how often, and what it should cost

FMFirms Marketing · 20 Oct 2026 · 8 min read

We have produced hundreds of short videos for clients in manufacturing, healthcare, real estate and education. The ones that work have almost nothing in common with a corporate film and almost everything in common with how people actually watch their phones.

Why short video, and why now

Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Facebook Reels are pushed to people who do not follow you. That is the point: it is the only organic channel left where a business with zero audience can reach thousands of relevant people in a week. The algorithm rewards watch time, not production budget, so a thirty-second clip shot on a phone can outperform a lakh-rupee film.

The formats that work, by business type

Manufacturers and industrial

Process videos. A machine running, a product being formed, a test being done. Satisfying to watch, and they prove capability better than any brochure. Add a caption that names the product and the application.

Clinics and hospitals

Doctor-to-camera explainers: one question, one answer, forty seconds. "When does a tooth need a root canal?" Patients watch, trust, and book. Facility walk-throughs and patient stories (with consent) are the other two.

Real estate

Walk-throughs with a steady hand and natural light, drone shots of the location, and CGI reveals for projects not yet built. We produced CGI reveal content for a developer that worked far harder than renders on a hoarding.

Services and agencies

Behind-the-scenes, before-and-after, and founder-to-camera opinions. People buy services from people.

Education and coaching

One concept per video, taught properly. Batch timings and results are the follow-up, not the lead.

The three-second rule

The first three seconds decide whether anyone watches the rest. Start with the most interesting frame, not a logo. Put the hook in text on screen: "This is how a 500 kg pallet truck is tested", "Three mistakes people make before dental implants". No intro, no "hi guys", no music build-up.

Captions, always

Most people watch without sound in a feed. Burned-in captions are not optional. They also help the algorithm understand what the video is about.

How often

Three a week is the point where accounts start to grow reliably. Two a week maintains. One a week is better than none but rarely compounds. Batch-shoot: one half-day of shooting produces eight to twelve videos if it is planned.

A monthly plan for a typical business

WeekVideosMix
13Process or explainer, proof (client, result), team or founder
23Explainer, before-and-after, FAQ answer
33Process, customer story, behind the scenes
43Explainer, offer or announcement, recap

Twelve videos, one shoot day, a fixed editing rhythm. This is the plan we run for most social media clients.

What it should cost

Three cost levels. Self-shot on a phone and edited by a team: lowest, and fine for explainers and process videos. A half-day shoot each month with a videographer plus editing: the middle, and what most growing businesses need. Scripted productions with lighting, sound and locations: for brand films and campaign hero pieces, not for weekly content. The mistake is paying brand-film prices for weekly reels, or expecting phone-quality content to work as a brand film. Match the level to the job.

Measure the right number

Not likes. Watch: reach from non-followers (are new people seeing it), average watch time (is the hook working), and profile visits and WhatsApp clicks after each video (is it bringing business). After three months you will know which formats bring enquiries, and that is what to make more of.

Key takeaways

  • Short video reaches people who do not follow you; it is the cheapest attention available to a business.
  • Match the format to the business: process for manufacturers, explainers for clinics, walk-throughs and CGI for real estate.
  • The first three seconds and burned-in captions decide everything.
  • Three videos a week, shot in one batch day, is the rhythm that grows accounts.
  • Measure non-follower reach, watch time and WhatsApp clicks, not likes.

Questions people ask

Can we shoot the videos ourselves?

For explainers and process clips, yes, with a few rules on light, framing and sound. We give clients a one-page shooting guide and handle editing, captions and publishing.

Do reels work for B2B and industrial companies?

Yes. Process videos from factories are among the best-performing content we produce, and they reach purchase managers and engineers who never search for you.

How long until we see results?

Reach improves within weeks when the hooks are right. Enquiries typically start in the second or third month as the account builds a body of proof.
